In Like a Lion, Out Like A..........

As most mid-westerners know, this winter has been a real bear.  Over the course of the winter, the cold has driven 2 possums, many feral cats, and more recently a skunk into the barn.  The blue jay family warmed themselves under the dryer vent, and the baby doe I stumbled upon in the thicket near the garden this winter are all indications that this will be a winter to be remembered for years to come.  What would the fox say? (I know, terrible joke, but I bet the song will be running through your head for hours to come)  I love poking the proverbial nest.

This weekend I got out of the house for the first time in months....I met 2 of my favorite art peeps Gloria Moses from Chicago, and Trish Lyons Ansert from Louisville in Toledo for a 1 day pastel class at the Toledo Botanical Gardens, hosted by the Toledo Artists Club with pastel Artist Mary Jane Erard. When I saw the posting on facebook for her class, I knew I had to attend.  (No, I am not a pastel artist, I've never painted with pastels, but have given it a few pathetic attempts in the past, only to end up with blurry mud, but I was drawn to her clean colors and very defined lines, brilliant landscapes, and more importantly, it very closely matched the look I've been experimenting with recently in glass.  (more on this later)  I needed a diversion from the experimentation and intense (almost studious) things I've been doing in the lab, (oops, I mean studio) for the past few months.  I've ordered more things that end with "ate" and "ide", complete with health warnings, and use alpha numeric name that rivals my college chemistry course (that I failed).

Mary Jane's course was a perfect respite from the worst winter I've seen in my life (and this is coming from a true Yankee; a New England native who remembers studded winter tires, mile long treks up the mountain with laundry and groceries after the car got stuck at the bottom, and snow until the end of April)

Mary Jane's subject matter, her sunny disposition, well laid out examples and materials and a day in beautiful Toledo Botanical Gardens, albeit frozen, were just the re-charge I needed to feel inspired.  I plan on taking next months class (unless I have a track meet to attend) and many more in the future.  Please let me know if you want to join me!

Here's a bit more news on what I've been up to.  If you are not a glass artist you will likely just want to skip the rest, lest your eyes glaze over in boredom.

As a glass artist, turned oil painter, turned glass-oil painter, I have striven to find the exact medium that fits what I want to accomplish in my creative endeavor.  I have been experimenting with "painting" on glass for years, but after trying nearly all available commercially made materials and or enamels made to paint on glass (and fire to fusing temperature)(not oven temp paints) I have given up on the idea that there exists a product that encompasses not just my goals but the palette and quality that I seek.  Realizing this, I began the painstaking process of breaking down the elements and properties of glass (90 coe for simplicity).  In the process I've stumbled upon many an artist that "paints" in glass.  The stained glass artists paint, but not in the way I would like to paint.  Frit painters "paint", but that is layering and sifting.  Yes it results in a painterly look and effect, but its not painting like one would paint with a brush.  Sgrafitto is more drawing and likened to printmaking.  I went through all of the above techniques, but in all of them, I am forced to think like a glass artist first, not a painter.  I am a painter.  I want the freedom to paint instinctively with a brush and a single stroke, on an easel, on glass, with paint that will fire to fusing temperatures and achieve the look I seek, as a glass artist and oil painter.  Perhaps I am asking too much, but I don't think I am.  This quest has led me to more college science department websites than art sites.  I've learned much, but there is much more to learn.  While I experiment and make mistakes, I am learning.  Every mistake is costly, but I learn something from it.    I will post some trials and errors soon for those interested.  For now, I am happy for the return of my easel's long winter visit in Kentucky, and the generosity and trust of a friend who allowed me a "payment plan" to purchase a much larger kiln to explore my dreams......stay tuned....

Trying to find my wings....

Those that have followed my art for the past few years, or know me well, understand that I haven't quite found my niche or direction yet in art.  I feel like I'm refining my skills and style, but have yet to settle on something, my voice, I suppose, that sets me apart from other artists.  One of the topics that I enjoy and seems to elicit the most emotion is my Navy series that I started when my son was in boot camp and I was too frantic on how he was doing to focus on much else, so I painted pictures that the recruit training command posted weekly and generously gave me permission to use as reference.  I really enjoy painting this series, and as a veteran myself, I often can put myself in the shoes of the subject I am painting.  Perhaps this is my destiny for painting, but I'm not sure yet.  While I've been given permission to use the photos, I'd like to gather my own references and material myself, perhaps the Navy would let me on a ship to get some of my own shots (ha! not likely)  Another idea that hit me was, surprisingly, during the super bowl commercials.  My two favorites were the Budweiser Clydesdales, and the Farmer one by Dodge.  Both of them showed concepts that elicited emotion and the idea of the everyday life of hardworking Americans.  I have always been drawn to the American story and the American dream and memories of how I grew up in a small town.  The generations of today seem to be missing a lot of that and I hope to try to capture some of these ideas before they are gone forever.  Stay tuned, likely I will still be painting random stuff until I formulate a plan but I think I'm getting closer................

I've been terrible about keeping up with my blog since I've been so busy painting.  This 30 n 30 day challenge has been a God send though, as usually I am in the winter doldrums in January and February with "Cabin fever" and it doesn't help that I live in a log cabin!  I'm so glad I am "forced" to go out and paint and I feel like I have grown so much just doing it so religously.  How about you?

I'm doing better with the painting than with the blogging, but that's ok, because I know that sometimes when I get a blog EVERY day in my mailbox sometimes I don't even click on it!  The challenge is really making me feel better about my paintings (after the first week anyway) and I'm feeling braver about tackling more difficult subjects....

Here are my next 3 attempts.  I gave the palette knife another try on the iris....I still don't seem to "get" it so I went back to brushes.  The large white flower gave me some trouble mostly I think because I painted bigger than I'm used to (11x14).  However, the cows also gave me trouble as I painted smaller (5x7)  Next year when I do this challenge I will definately pick one size and stick with it.

8x10 oil on canvas board $75 click HERE to buy

I forgot to post my painting yesterday, so it's two for one day!  I really want to get better at using the knife, but I have to say I really struggled with this.  I don't know if it's because I'm tryng to fit a lot in to a small canvas or what, but I'm going to keep at it.  The cupcake was done with brushes and is 6x6, the tulips were done with knives that Leslie Saeta recommends on her website.  (Dick Blick about $8 each and there are 3 sizes.  I'll try to get a picture for the next blog post.)

I must admit that I am quite out of practice with my painting and I had a heck of a time with these apples.  I'm looking forward to getting back in the groove again painting everyday, maybe even twice a day :)

Covered Bridge

11x14 oil on linen board  Click here to bid

Now that fall is finally here I am hoping to post and paint more regularly.  Show season is officially over with the exception of a December widget (craft) show (widgets are things I make that are low in price and SELL, like tiny paintings, magnets, jewelry, etc....Widgets are not real art but they help pay the bills especially around the holidays.  I like making widgets sometimes, it's a nice diversion from painting.)  This painting is from a painting retreat I went to last month in French Lick, Indiana compliments of a wonderful friend and fellow artist Marianne Van Rohr.  We met at a workshop last year and i attended another workshop this past spring with her.  She generously shared her timeshare with fellow artists and we had a wonderful week of fellowship, painting, and visiting.  We took many photos of this idyllic town so I'm certain you will see more of them in the near future.

I'm Back!

6x6 oil on panel $50 click HERE to buy

I'm back!!  I'm sure some of you thought I'd given up painting and gone on walkabout somewhere but I have been just as busy as ever, but decided to take the summer off from blogging to recharge my brain.  I have lots to share, but for now I will just share a painting I created during the Black Swamp Arts Festival this weekend.  I traded one of my not so famous cupcake paintings with a local cupcake shop for some cupcakes to paint while I sat in my booth. This is the first time I'm dared to venture out and paint publically and I was surprised at how I didn't seem to mind it as much as I thought.  People were very gracious and most just watched without comment, something I was worried would be too distracting for me.  Here is the first one I created yesterday.  Unfortunately the free cupcake offer is no longer valid (sluuurp)

"Bobcat" Oil on Panel 8x10

"Plein Air Crash" 6x8 oil on linen

Summers are always so busy and crazy and this one is no exception so I've decided not to put too much pressure on myself to blog as often as I'd like and maybe during the summer months, share updates weekly.  I've been working on my new skills I learned at Kyle Martin's workshop and I'm really learning how to see value and color temperature.  On of Kyle's bits of advice were to stop looking around for pretty pictures and look for good design and contrast.  So you will see that some of my subjects are a bit ordinary but It allows me to focus entirely on learning about value while painting plein air....the one of a farm scene had a bit of an "accident" after my easel tipped over under very suspicious circumstances since there was not even a hint of a breeze...hmmm one wonders one wonders....Anyway, I kind of like the effect of the accident.

Sunny Days and Blooms

6x6 oil on Panel
Bidding Starts at $40 click HERE to bid

It's 88 and sunny here in Ohio, just 5 days after 40 degree temps but I'm not complaining!  The irises are blooming so I have a feeling you will see several Iris paintings in the near future, and I just planted some Dahlias, sunflowers, and poppies! Anenomes tomorrow!...I'm on a flower roll I think......This is the last of the photo refs from the workshop, I think I can safely take my own now....

Final Day of Dreama's workshop

12 x 12 oil on panel click to bid

Trying to catch up and recover from the workshop with Dreama this past weekend....as always I come home to a lot of household chores that I neglected in the days preceding and while I was gone, so mowing and laundry are tops on my list today.  This cupcake was from the last day and I can't take full credit for it because it was painted by at least ten other artists during "musical easels" which I have to admit was the highlight of the workshop for me!  Everyone got 3 minutes per station until Dreama determined we were finished and when I got back to my easel this was there!!  I'm posting the other two paintings because I think I have better pics of them now.....

Also, for my faithful followers, thank you for your kind comments that I am still trying to catch up and reply to!!  They didn't go unnoticed and I appreciate all of your thoughts!!

Anchors Aweigh

5x7 oil on panel Click HERE to bid on original.  bid starts at $1 shipping is free.

well, I did paint a flower today, and it was a major flop, and after hearing all the happy moms on the Navy For Moms website that are headed to Great Lakes this weekend for their kid's Pass in Review (boot camp graduation) I was inspired to paint something different, and it will likely become at least a weekly challenge for me in honor of the graduating recruits and their moms that have helped support me through this.  "Anchors Aweigh" is the Navy theme song and it plays at their pass in review.  The recruits know it well, they sing it often during boot camp.  I loved painting these young soldiers, esp from  behind because I'm not so good with figures! Any mom of a sailor is welcome to use/copy/print this for their personal use. I signed this one a little different today, in honor of all the moms that miss their sailors.

added note: one of the Navy moms asked me how I could part with this.  My answer to that is easy, if I sell this, the proceeds  goes towards the expenses of seeing my own son's pass-in-review where I get to see his face!

Art in the Round

Oil on 78 vinyl record Click HERE to bid

8x10 oil on panel Click HERE to bid

Last night at our challenge group we decided on 2 challenges for next month, one of them is just using the theme "Green", to be interpreted any way you want.  The other was simply because I have 3 boxes of old 78 vinyl records sitting in the barn taking up space, so you guessed it, painting on the record.   Today I primed several with spray acrylic primer.  When dry I'll sand them and then paint, but I also wanted to see if I could paint straight on the record since it has grooves for a bit of tooth.  It is a very nice surface to paint on, the oils don't get sucked into the board like canvas or gessoboard.  I'm not quite sure how to deal with the hole in the middle yet, in this case, perhaps a worm in the apple?  or clock workings?  Either way, it's pretty darn cool, and for sale.  Bidding starts at $1

I also finished my painting from yesterday.

Comedy of Errors and Acts of Desperation

After
6x6 oil on panel click HERE to bid

 Before

Some days just refuse to go as planned no matter how you slice it.  The other day my eye glasses were inadvertantly stepped on and smashed by those that shall remain unnamed since he is very sorry and apologetic about it, and well, the logical question would be why are they on the floor in the first place, but that's neither here nor there.   This morning, I went to replace the glasses only to find out that my prescription had expired.  Frustrated beyond words, I questioned why after decades of prescriptions that last 2 years each, why this last one would only be good for a year.  The kind lady gently reminded me that I am now over 40, and so it goes......With no appointments available until Monday, I took my ridiculously glued, melted, and taped glasses and stomped away.  (yes, melted, because at one point during the repair process I thought if I just melted the plastic frame they could meld back together.  Word of warning: Plastic is highly flammable!)

Having had a late and frustrating start in the studio, I put it out of my head, excited at the prospect of starting my painting for the White on White challenge for this weeks DPW challenge.  I've admired the paintings of other artists that can paint values and shades of white like it's their full time job.  Today was my day, and I was ready.  I had already sketched out my panel the day before, having spent hours on various set ups, and it was just waiting for me to start putting paint to panel.  Then I noticed I had misplaced my wallet, last used at Meijers the day before.  I scoured every possible nook and cranny in the house, the car, called the store, retraced my steps, still no wallet.   Realizing my continued search was futile, I vowed to make something good out of the day and headed out to the studio.  yeah, i'm sure you all know how the rest of the story goes.

Needless to say, it's hard enough to paint without prescription eyeglasses, let alone with the despair of your lost wallet.  Why I tried is beyond me, but still I forged ahead.   After about an hour of laying paint atop of muddy paint, only making it muddier, I stomped off in disgust.   Looked around for the wallet again, sighed, went back to the studio, and in an act of sheer desperation, decided to give the paining just a few more swipes of the brush.   Rarely does this ever work, but this one of those one times that I saw just a glimmer of hope and decided to just leave it for now.  It likely will all be wiped off in the morning to just start fresh, but it was one of those times that you just wanted to end the rotten day off on a good note, and this was one of them.  Although I don't have a complete painting, I realized where I went wrong, so when I start over tomorrow, I get to start off in the right place.  TGIF.

(Top painting, added the next day, is the corrected version of my painting, hooray, what a difference a day makes!)

Kiss

6x6 oil on panel
Yesterday I did a few set-ups for chocolate kisses.  I had a potential customer ask if I would try to do one before Valentine's day.  Now I know why there just are not that many paintings of them out there, they're harder than they look!  The one I attempted yesterday I ended up wiping off and started over this morning with a simpler design.  I'll probably try 4 or 5 of these.
